How to back up a Discord server
By ESN Systems, makers of ESN Guardian. Updated November 3, 2026.
Discord has no restore button. If channels or roles get deleted, you rebuild them by hand unless you saved a copy first. Here is what Discord keeps, what a real backup needs, and how to set one up in a few minutes.
What Discord does and doesn't keep for you
Discord does not have a “restore my server” button. If a channel is deleted, the channel and its messages are gone for everyone; there is no recycle bin. If roles are deleted, the people who had them simply don't have them any more. Discord's audit log tells you who deleted what, but it can't put anything back.
The one built-in tool is a server template. Discord's Server Templates article explains it: a template copies a server's channels, roles and permission settings into a link that can create a new server with the same layout. It does not copy messages or members. A template is useful as a blueprint, but it rebuilds a new server; it doesn't repair the one you have, and it doesn't put your members' roles back on them.
What a real backup should cover
When a server gets nuked or a mod deletes the wrong thing, these are the pieces you actually miss:
- Channels and categories, in the right order, with their topics and slowmode.
- Permission overwrites on each channel, which take the longest to rebuild by hand.
- Roles: names, colours, permissions and order.
- Who had which role. Recreating a role is easy; working out which 300 members had it is not.
- Emoji, stickers and webhooks, which people forget until a bot's announcements stop arriving.
- Server settings and bans.
Message history is the hard one. No bot can bring back old messages once Discord has deleted a channel. Be wary of anyone who promises full message restores.
Guardian takes server snapshots and can put deleted channels and roles back for you.
Add ESN GuardianHow to back up a Discord server with ESN Guardian
- Full server snapshots.
/snapshot takesaves settings, roles, channels, permissions and bans./snapshot listand/snapshot infoshow what you have, and/snapshot autotakes them on a schedule so you never have to remember. - Hourly role snapshots. Guardian keeps hourly copies of who has which role, and
/snapshot roles-restoreputs roles back on members. - Emoji, stickers and webhooks. Snapshots keep copies of emoji and sticker images and the webhook list, and
/snapshot assets-restorebrings them back. - See what changed.
/snapshot diffcompares a snapshot with the server as it is now, so you only restore what is actually missing. - Restore just the structure.
/guardian structure backupand/guardian structure restorerecreate missing roles and channels at a safe pace. Staff permissions are never recreated automatically, so a restore can't hand power back to an attacker. - Undo one attacker.
/rewindrestores everything one account changed in the last few minutes, without rolling back the rest of the server. - A recovery checklist.
/snapshot checklistwalks staff through a restore step by step. - Deleted messages in the meantime. Guardian keeps deleted attachments for 24 hours and saves bulk deletes as a readable transcript in your logs. That's not a full message backup, but it is evidence of what was posted.
All of this is included on every server. Premium only changes Guardian's name, avatar, banner and bio.
A simple backup routine
- Add Guardian, drag its role near the top, and run
/guardian setup. - Take a first snapshot with
/snapshot takeonce your server looks the way you want it. - Turn on scheduled snapshots with
/snapshot auto. - Take a manual snapshot before big changes, like a server redesign or a new staff team.
- Keep a Discord server template too if you want a blueprint you can share or use to start fresh.
- Test it. On a spare server, practise a restore once so you know the steps before you need them. Guardian's
/reliability backup-testchecks that its own backups can be read back.

Questions
Can you back up a Discord server?
Discord has no built-in full backup. Server templates copy the channel and role layout but not messages or members. A backup bot like ESN Guardian saves channels, roles, permissions, bans, who has which role, emoji, stickers and webhooks, and can restore them.
Can a bot restore deleted Discord messages?
No. Once Discord deletes a channel its messages are gone. Guardian keeps deleted attachments for 24 hours and saves bulk deletes as a transcript, but no bot can bring back a deleted channel's message history.
How often should I back up my server?
Use scheduled snapshots so it happens on its own, and take an extra one before big changes. Guardian also keeps hourly role snapshots.
Does Guardian's backup cost anything?
No. Snapshots, restores and /rewind are included on every server. Premium only changes the bot's look.
